Five Ways Parents Can Stimulate Positive Thinking

Thoughts are causes. Thoughts lead to the spoken word and ultimately to courses of action.

Parents are constantly modeling for their children. When facing challenges, words and actions of parents will be remembered and later imitated by children. The minds of children are shaped not only during major events, but also as daily problems are encountered on a smaller scale. For this reason it is crucial that families model and discuss ideas such as tenacity and responsibility on every possible occasion.

The following are suggested ways families may engage in discussions and activities focused on positive thinking.

1. Their next success. Use positive quotes to stimulate discussions through websites such as www.ThinkExist.com

2. Whenever possible, point out examples of tenacity. Review the stories of Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Theodore Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), Michael Jordan, and others who experienced setbacks before great success.

3. Emphasize how choices lead to consequences. Discuss the proverb: “When we pick up one end of the stick, we pick up the other.”

4. Get each member of the family involved in a family project. Plan together the desired outcome and the necessary steps to reach the predetermined goal. Brainstorming, problem solving, and working together gives meaningful opportunities to use positive thinking towards a memorable outcome.

5. Participate in community activities. Show how the family unit can work together towards improving society. Individual choices which positively impact others in the community can create a rippling effect like concentric waves in a pond. Contact City Hall or websites such as or to find out what is happening in your local area.
